Identification guides for
separating confusion species
Many observers find
the identification of some shorebirds to be tricky at best, and quite often
extremely difficult. In several instances two species can look very much alike,
such as in the case of Greater and Lesser Sand Plovers, and Wandering and
Grey-tailed Tattlers.
In the coming weeks, identification
guides will be developed that feature locally-taken photographs. They will
address some of the commonly encountered
problems and offer advice and tips on how to solve them. Two such guides have
now been completed.
The following notes,
comparing similar species, may be of interest. They will shortly be incorporated within
existing guides or become the basis of new ones.
